Shipping Container Project Heads to Vegas Council

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Plans for an office, restaurant and retail development that would be built from shipping containers are headed to a vote by the Las Vegas City Council.
The Container Park project also features a playground and a large sculpture of a praying mantis that would shoot flames from its antennae.

The project is part of a $350 million urban renewal program backed by Tony Hsieh (SHAY), CEO of online shoe retailer Zappos.com.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports (bit.ly/NCaoZQ) the project would be located at the intersection of Fremont and Seventh streets. City planning staff had recommended denying the project in part because storefronts would be fenced off from the street.

The city Planning Commission unanimously endorsed the project Tuesday. The proposal goes before the City Council on Sept. 19.
